Self-care is a necessity, not an indulgence

I am the first to admit that I can be terrible when it comes to self care. I put everyone and everything first. Even the house and garden had a higher priority then I did. I use to tell myself there is so much to get done and I just have to do it. Week after week until I would totally burn out.

I have realised that Self-care is an important activity to do every day. It is NOT selfish. Doing so will lead toward a better balance among your dimensions of wellness and lead toward improved overall health and wellness. Life is precious, and it is meant to be enjoyed.

My self care this year isn't what you would expect either. I have been going to regular physio and acupuncture appointments to help me manage my chronic condition. Even if it provides me with 8 hours relief I feel it is better than nothing. I have come to terms that my condition provides me with pain daily ever since I was younger. However if I nourish my body with good food, sleep, beautiful Pilates movement and physical therapy sessions I feel so much better and happier. I am also uterlising our beautiful Central Coast. Going on gentle bike rides on the Davistown to Kincumber bike track and doing gentle walks around Brisbane water. I am trying to reward my body and not punish it. I wish I could go Mountain bike riding and running with my kids. Accepting this is not what makes my body happy is ok. I am not perfect. Nobody is. Allowing myself to accept this has made me feel happier.

I have asked a lot of clients what they do to take care of themselves. Most of you have stressful jobs and run very busy families. I learnt that Pilates has helped a lot of you take an hour each week to give yourself some me time. It helps you move, feel better and clear your mind. I feel really honoured that Pilates at my studio has provided self care and provided a beautiful space to feel happy and unwind from everyday stresses.

Self-care is not selfish! It's one of the best things you can do for your kids and yourself.

Try to take time each week for yourself. You will feel so much happier for it.
